About Katie

Eliminate the negative attitude and believe you can do anything. Replace ‘if I can, I hope, maybe’ with ‘I can, I will, I must.'” -Mary Kay Ash

Hello, my name is Katie Berger, and I am a junior at Frisco High School studying journalism as a member of the Independent Study and Mentorship program.  Outside of ISM, I am a Lieutenant on the Frisco Stars Dance Team, a member of National Honors Society, an avid Harry Potter fan, a health nut, and most importantly, a passionate writer. I have had a love of reading and writing since my elementary school years; I remember reading as many fantasy and fiction novels as I could and always looking forward to writing essays in my English classes. This has remained consistent throughout high school, and I am now ready to pursue my passion into college and the professional world.

My mission statement for my ISM journey is as follows:

Through the Independent Study and Mentorship program, I aim to develop my writing, reporting, and analysis skills through experience in the professional world of journalism. Under the guidance of my mentor, I hope to push myself out of my comfort zone in my writing, expand my knowledge as to what a professional career in journalism entails, and open my mind to new perspectives on the world around me, all for the purpose of acquiring the skills necessary to obtain a job as a successful journalist.

My goals in ISM;

  1. I will have a mentor before I leave on Thanksgiving break, as well as have scheduled weekly times for mentor visits.
  2. I will have a rough outline of my plan for my original work by the end of October.
  3. I will write on my own, outside of school, at least twice a week to practice improving my writing skills.
  4. I will begin following online news sources and keep up with what’s going on in the country in order to stay up to date on what people in the journalism community are writing about.

ISM is an incredible opportunity, and I feel blessed to be able to learn more about what I love in a hands-on fashion. I hope you enjoy following me on my ISM journey!
